Every year, during the Malayalam month of Chingam, the people of Kerala prepare for the most joyful event in their calendar: the annual return of their beloved king.
King Mahabali — the generous, just, and beloved demon king who was sent to the underworld by Lord Vishnu but granted the boon of visiting his people once a year — is coming home. And Kerala, true to its reputation for hospitality and beauty, prepares a welcome worthy of the greatest king who ever lived.
Onam 2026 dates: 22 August to 2 September 2026, with Thiruvonam (the main day) on 31 August 2026.

The Ten Days of Onam
Onam is a ten-day festival, with each day having its own name and significance:
- Atham (Day 1, 22 Aug) — The festival begins. The first Pookalam (flower carpet) is laid at the entrance of every home.
- Chithira to Moolam (Days 2–7) — The Pookalam grows larger each day as new rings of flowers are added. Preparations for the feast begin.
- Pooradam (Day 8) — Clay idols of Mahabali and Vamana are installed in homes.
- Uthradom (Day 9) — The eve of Thiruvonam. The most elaborate preparations. Shopping, cooking, and the final additions to the Pookalam.
- Thiruvonam (Day 10, 31 Aug) — THE MAIN DAY. Mahabali arrives. The Onasadya (feast) is served. The Vallam Kali (snake boat races) are held. The celebration reaches its peak.
The Pookalam — A Carpet of Flowers for the King
The Pookalam is the most iconic visual of Onam — an elaborate circular carpet of fresh flowers arranged in concentric rings on the floor at the entrance of every home. It begins small on Atham and grows larger each day, with new rings of different flowers added daily, until by Thiruvonam it is a magnificent, fragrant masterpiece.
The Pookalam is not merely decoration. It is a welcome mat for King Mahabali — a visual prayer that says: "We have prepared the most beautiful thing we can make. Please come and see how much we love you."
Traditional Pookalam flowers include marigold, jasmine, chrysanthemum, ixora, and the small yellow thumba flower. Each ring of the Pookalam uses a different flower, creating a stunning pattern of colours and textures.
The Onasadya — The Feast of Feasts
The Onasadya — the Onam feast — is one of the greatest culinary achievements in Indian food culture. Served on a fresh banana leaf, it consists of 26 or more dishes arranged in a specific order, eaten in a specific sequence, with specific etiquette.
The dishes include: rice, sambar, rasam, avial (mixed vegetables in coconut), olan (ash gourd in coconut milk), kalan (yam in yogurt), erissery (pumpkin and lentils), pachadi (raita), pickle, papadum, banana chips, and the essential payasam (kheer) — at least two or three varieties.
The Onasadya is served to everyone — family, friends, neighbours, and strangers. On Thiruvonam, no one in Kerala should go without a feast. This is Mahabali's legacy: the memory of a king under whose rule everyone had enough.
Vallam Kali — The Snake Boat Races
The Vallam Kali — the snake boat races of Kerala — are one of the most spectacular sporting events in India. Long, narrow boats (chundan vallams) carrying up to 100 oarsmen race across the backwaters of Kerala to the rhythm of the Vanchipattu (boat song). The most famous race is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha.
Watching the Vallam Kali is an unforgettable experience — the sight of a hundred oarsmen moving in perfect synchrony, the sound of the Vanchipattu rising over the water, the spray of the backwaters in the August sun.
What to Wear for Onam — The Complete Guide
The Traditional Kerala Look
The traditional Onam attire for both men and women is the Kasavu — the iconic Kerala fabric of off-white cotton with a gold border. It is one of the most elegant and distinctive regional textiles in India — simple, pure, and extraordinarily beautiful.
For women: The traditional Onam attire is the set mundu — a two-piece garment consisting of a white mundu (lower cloth) and a white neriyathu (upper cloth/stole) with gold kasavu borders. The neriyathu is draped over the left shoulder, with the gold border visible. This is the most authentic and beautiful Onam look.
For men: A white mundu with a gold kasavu border, worn with a white shirt or bare-chested with a white angavastram (stole) draped over the shoulders.
