Without zero, there is no modern mathematics. Without modern mathematics, there is no physics, no engineering, no computers, no internet, no space travel. The entire edifice of modern technological civilisation rests on a single concept invented in India approximately 1,500 years ago. But here is what the history books don’t tell you. Zero was not invented by a mathematician. It was conceived by a philosopher. And it was not primarily a mathematical idea. It was a spiritual one.

Before Zero

The ancient Greeks had no zero. For them, influenced by Aristotle, the void did not exist. Nature abhors a vacuum. Nothing cannot be something. The Romans had no zero either — which is why, despite their engineering genius, they never developed algebra or calculus. The Babylonians had a placeholder symbol but didn’t treat it as a number in its own right.

What India did was different. India didn’t just create a symbol for nothing. India argued that nothing is something — that the void is real, that emptiness has properties, that zero is a number that can be added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided like any other. This was a revolution. And it came from a very specific place.

Shunya — The Void That Contains Everything

The Sanskrit word for zero is Shunya — emptiness, void, nothingness. But in the Indian philosophical tradition, Shunya is not simply the absence of something. In Buddhist philosophy, Shunya is the fundamental nature of reality — the doctrine of Sunyata teaches that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, that the void is the ground from which everything arises. In Hindu philosophy, the Upanishads describe Brahman as neti neti — “not this, not this” — the reality that can only be approached by negation. The void that is also the fullness.

The Indian mathematicians who conceived of zero were working within this philosophical tradition. The idea that nothing could be something was not strange or counterintuitive in the Indian context. It was the natural mathematical expression of a philosophy that had been exploring the nature of nothingness for centuries.

Brahmagupta and the Rules of Zero

Brahmagupta, a mathematician from Rajasthan in the 7th century CE, was the first to give zero its full mathematical identity. In his text Brahmasphutasiddhanta — written in 628 CE — he wrote down the rules for arithmetic with zero for the first time in history. He was treating zero as a number — a full participant in arithmetic, with its own properties and rules. This was revolutionary.

Aryabhata and the Place Value System

Aryabhata — the 5th century mathematician and astronomer from Pataliputra (modern Patna) — developed the place value system, in which the value of a digit depends on its position. This system requires a placeholder for empty positions — and that placeholder is zero. Combined with Brahmagupta’s arithmetic of zero, it created the number system the entire modern world uses today.

It was transmitted to the Arab world through the 8th and 9th century translation movement — which is why we call our numerals “Arabic numerals,” though they are more accurately called Hindu-Arabic numerals. The Arabs themselves called them al-arqam al-hindiyyah — the Indian numerals. From the Arab world, Fibonacci brought the system to Europe in the 13th century. The zero that Brahmagupta defined in Rajasthan in 628 CE is the zero that runs your phone today.

The Oldest Written Zero

In 2017, researchers at the University of Oxford carbon-dated the Bakhshali manuscript — found in a field near Peshawar in 1881 — and established it contains the oldest written zeros in the world, dating to approximately 300–400 CE. Written as small dots, they are the ancestors of every zero in every piece of software ever written.

What Zero Means

The Greeks could not conceive of zero because their philosophy told them the void did not exist. India conceived of zero because its philosophy had concluded that the void is not nothing — it is the ground of everything. Without the silence between notes, there is no music. Without the space between words, there is no language. Without zero, there is no number.

The Indian philosophers who gave the world zero were not just solving a mathematical problem. They were expressing a truth about the nature of existence — that what appears to be nothing is, in fact, the most fundamental something of all.
